3. RESIDENCY: Künstlerstätte Schloss Bleckede (Germany)
Deadline: September 23, 2006; Source: ARTSERVIS #213

Since 1979 the Künstlerstätte Schloss Bleckede has been seeking to promote young artists who explore innovative positions in the field of contemporary art. Today artists, whose work addresses complex aesthetic, cultural or political issues, rarely find the necessary support to realize their ambitious projects.

This is why the Künstlerstätte Schloss Bleckede wishes to offer these artists the opportunity to develop their work in the course of a residential scholarship of three or six months.

The Künstlerstätte Schloss Bleckede offers ideal working conditions. The historic remise of the castle of Bleckede has been restored and transformed into three studios, each of which provides an extensive work space and a comfortable living area. The castle is located in the nature reserve Elbufer Drawehn close to the river Elbe. The placid environment guarantees an atmosphere of undisturbed concentration.

The scholarship includes a monthly grant of Euro 1.400,- , which is made available for up to three scholarship holders at any one time, by the state of Lower Saxony.

The city of Lüneburg is not far away. Here the innovative programme of exhibitions and events staged by the Kunstraum of the University of Lüneburg and the Halle für Kunst Lüneburg e.V. allows the participation in the contemporary art world. If required, the facilities of the cultural studies-course at the University of Lüneburg might be used.

The residential scholarship will be awarded on recommendation of a jury of art professionals.
Since 2001 Bleckede has been publishing small booklets about the artists in residence and their works.

13. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 50 YEARS OF CONCRETE POETRY (Uruguay)
Deadline:November 10, 2006; Source: Clemente Padin

[versión española sigue]

This invitation is directed not only to the great community of visual poets of the whole world but and above all to specialists and lovers of poetry. At the end of this year, 2006, we will celebrate 50 years of the birth of one of the most important tendencies of visual poetry of the world: we refer to Concrete Poetry.

In December, 1956, the historic Art Concrete expositions began in Brazil giving birth to one of the most important artistic movements in the world in the second half of the XX century. The participant poets in those expositions were: Decio Pignatari, Augusto and Haroldo de Campos, Ronaldo Azeredo, Ferreira Gullar and Wlademir Dias-Pino. The first exposition took place in San Pablo, from 4 to 18 December, in the Art Modern Museum (MAM) and the next one was inaugurated in Rio de Janeiro, in February 7, 1957, in the vestibule of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Brazil.

Concrete Poetry arose, simultaneously, in Europe and in Latin American: in 1952 Noigandres group was founded in Sao Paulo; in 1953 the manifesto "For Concrete Poetry" of Oyvind Falström appeared in Sweden and in 1953 "Constelaciones" of Eugen Gomringer, the Swiss-Bolivian poet, secretary of the Superior School of the Form of Ulm, Switzerland, heiress of the German Bahaus, appears in Switzerland. Gomringer and Pignatari were the one who coined the term Concrete Poetry in 1955.

In homage to these outstanding events we invite you to send us notes, commentary, bibliography, photos, poems or documents that remember those historic moments to form a body of knowledge and works in relation to one of the last poetic movements we have known. Send material to Clemente Padin´s email (<mailto:7w1k4nc9@adinet.com.uy>7w1k4nc9@adinet.com.uy). Subsequently, around November 2006, the selected material will be added to BOEK861, the website of Cesar Reglero, at the time of the Colloquium on the 50 anniversary of concrete poetry that will be carried out in the University of Stuttgart, Germany, from 23 to 26 November, 2006.

The pictures and poems should be no larger than 300 KB in JPEG files of high resolution and, the texts on DIN A4, or letter-sized pages in Word files. Deadline for receipt: 10 November 2006.

16. CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: "The 15th Performance Art Conference: NYEPI" - E. P. I. Zentrum (Bali)
Deadline: not given (Event Date: March 20, 2007); Source: Boris Nieslony

The 15th Performance Art Conference

NYEPI

The realization of ability “to be an angel” for any one

Nyepi, Bali’s Day of Silence - Nyepi 2007 - take place March, 20. 2007.

There is a curfew during every New Year’s celebration on Bali.
All evil spirits shall be irritated by the means of this “Day of Silence”.

Concept

° Performance-Artists worldwide will be invited to participate in the 24 hour event "Nyepi“.

There are two optional ways to participate:

a – The artists travel to Bali and will realize the event together with the artists from Indonesia and/or other present visitors and participants of the project at any chosen location there. It will be a lieu in the country because the whole city life will be completely disrupted. No production – no discussion – just be quiet and less in movements as possible.

b – Worldwide. The participating artists will realize this 24 hour happening in their home country, during a journey, at the place of their present being, alone or together with others. This can as well take place within any other project, while being on a vacation or in any other way. Thus any potential lieu worldwide, where the participating artist stays.

This event will and shall be isochronous.
For example 0:00 a.m. on the 20th of March in Bali equals 4 p.m. on the 19th of March in the UK and 11a.m. in New York on 19th of March.

° A website to document the event will be established. Only the names of the participating artist and names of the locations will be published there. No explanation, no depiction – simply the names and the place. This will be provided by ASA-European / E.P.I. Zentrum.

Philosophic Facts
° Man has only the choice between understanding and action, between insufferable truth and playful humbuggery, as long as he does not finalize, what he - with the help of his proud achievements hectically operates: the end of the historic process, that means his downfall, or if granted, the beginning of the past-historic era.“ Cioran

Slow down, renew, standstill, the quiescence worldwide during one single day, calm via slightest movement.

°John Cage: „The music that I focus on, does not have to be called music. Nothing exists within this music, that has to be remembered. No themes, just activity of tone and silence.”

° Charron noted down, that he recognized more brouhaha and turmoil in Florenz within the last ten years, then within the last 500 years in Graubünden, and concluded, that a polity can only endure, when it is possible, to “quiet and ease the spirit”.

° August 29th, in 1952, the American pianist David Tudor performed the world premiere of a new composition in New York. He sat down at the grand piano, closed the lid, persevered exactly 4 minutes and 33 seconds at his instrument and then opened the lid again.

Transformation of traditions - to become tradition.
That the idea and cultural traditions of "Nyepi“ shine from Bali all over the planet.
That this day shall be performed annually, representing the first intercultural day of all the peoples of the world.
That „Nyepi - 2007” shall be transformed from a genuine artistic project to a cultural project.
That all peoples of the world are invoked, to anchor and legitimate this day within their catalogue of constitutional laws
(or to anchor it under their various existing forms of written constitutional laws, etc..).
That individuals are found, who delve into the further development of this project in their countries.

Nyepi
On Nyepi day itself, every street is quiet - there are nobody doing their normal daily activities. There is usually Pecalangs (traditional Balinese security man) who controls and checks for street security. Pecalang wear a black uniform and a Udeng or Destar (a Balinese traditional “hat” that is usually used in ceremony). The Pecalangs main task is not only to control the security of the street but also to stop any activities that disturb Nyepi. No traffic is allowed, not only cars but also people, who have to stay in their own houses. Light is kept to a minimum or not at all, the radio or TV is turned down and, of course, no one works. Even love making, this ultimate activity of all leisure times, is not supposed to take place, nor even attempted. The whole day is simply filled with the barking of a few dogs, the shrill of insect and is a simple long quiet day in the calendar of this otherwise hectic island. On Nyepi the world expected to be clean and everything starts anew, with Man showing his symbolic control over himself and the “force” of the World, hence the mandatory religious control.

17. RESIDENCY: "TAOH Residency" (Norway)
Deadline: not indicated Source: Tou Scene

An opportunity for performance based artists to spend up to 2 weeks in Stavanger city, Norway at Tou Scene, a centre for contemporary arts.

TAOH residency provides an alternative art space promoting underground art works by performance artists, anarchists, subvertors, activists; you define it by what you do. There are no fees available but you are welcome to stay free of any charges for a period up to 2 weeks.

Tou Scene is converted from an old brewery to a thriving Art Centre. It is situated right next to the sea in beautiful surroundings. With the help of the architect firm Helen&Hard, the building still maintains the raw data of its history and layers of construction is still visible. There are plenty of opportunities to make site-specific work as the building still houses original tanks and equipment. The building officially opened 29th of April 2005 and despite its short history it houses the biggest Electronica festival of the Nordic countries and numerous other festivals and activities.

A turquoise bunk bed was donated by the artist group G.U.N Ladies from Oslo. They have donated similar bunkbeds in 5 other cities and this residency therefore has a network in Riga, Valencia, Rotterdam, Åbo, and New York. The bunkbed is now placed in a project- room; 25m2 with a garage door accessing an outdoor area. It has access to toilet, shower and small kitchenette in a neighbouring building, primitive standard-high quality opportunities. The room is in the midst of several permanent artists studios. An artist lead group runs the TAOH residency. We do not hold any equipment but can assist you in terms of guiding you to cheap equipment hire.

The primary goal for the residency is to help the exchange of artists that choose to work with questions of Live Art,New Media and time based practices. You will be welcome to show work-but this is optional. We do however expect you to hold a self-presentation for the artists resident at Tou Scene.

Fiona Griffiths returns to Toronto and offers three colourful workshops for your fall artistic musings.

KINETICS WEEKEND/06
Moving from the inside out $175.00
SEPTEMBER 23 & 24 10am-6pm
at the Dancemakers Studio, The Distillery District,
55 Mill St., Building #58, Studio # 313

Lets get grounded!! featuring those delectable feet and luscious legs. Release accumulated tension in the deep tissues of the feet and free the joints and arches to spring up into the body. Next, calves and thighs are massaged with slightly bigger balls and slowly moved to rediscover the way the legs moves themselves

KINETIC AWARENESS is an holistic training system developed by New York dancer/choreographer, Elaine Summers, and is great work for anyone interested in movement research. Lying on small air-filled balls, placed under or near the area to be explored; release techniques are incorporated, encouraging muscles to relax. As the anatomy is visualized and the body/mind reconnects, the area can be explored at a deeper and more constructive level. Experimenting with small slow movements releases tensions stored in muscles and joints and leads to improved posture and joyful movement.

KINETIC AWARENESS has 5 phases leading from awareness through movement to choreography. Many universities all over the world have Kinetic Awareness in their dance and theatre programs.

SOURCEWORK Details from the work $250.00
September 29, 6-10pm

Sourcework is an accumulation of techniques for intensive performer training. Grotowski/Putnam/Pochinko based; this formalized curriculum explores sources for artistic expression inherent in the body/mind. A way of working that requires honesty, immediacy and rigorous attention to detail. This work studies impulse and what can be done to embrace, edit and/or block those creative urges.

Dundas St. West from Keele Street to Quebec Avenue

Communities are more than collections of individuals; they are the product of the various exchanges and relationships that individuals and groups cultivate each day. These relationships influence all sorts of transactions, including ones that are social, economic, political, spiritual, ethical, and administrative, and they affect the experiences that define our quality of life.

"Trust Us, We're Artists" (TUWA) is a program of performance-based interventions by five Canadian artists who are interested in issues concerning civic space, social interaction, communication, and behaviour. It is a program that strives to explore the many ways artists can contribute to the development of community life, particularly with regard to how creative thinking can encourage new perspectives. To highlight the importance of relationships within urban environments, TUWA offers a variety of projects that rely on dialogue, physical engagement, and trust as a means of encouraging participants to abandon obstacles to communication, new experiences, and spontaneous fun. Accordingly, the featured performances are interactive, and all visitors to the Junction Arts Festival are welcome to get involved.

The Junction Arts Festival is planned and organized by The Junction Forum for Arts and Culture - a local non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts.

20. MEETING: Status of the Artist legislation in Ontario
Date; September 21, 2006; Source: ARCCO

On Thursday, September 21st, 2006, Rosario Marchese, Member of Provincial Parliament for Trinity Spadina, will be hosting a meeting for artists in his riding to discuss the need for Status of the Artist legislation in Ontario.

Due to the pressure put on the Liberals by artists and arts organizations in 2002 and 2003, the McGuinty Liberals promised to introduce Status of the Artist legislation if elected. Three years later &Mac246; we are still waiting!

It is essential that artists receive the same protection afforded to other workers in Ontario through legislation that addresses their real needs. We all know cultural workers contribute a great deal while receiving so little in return. It is time we pressure the McGuinty Liberals to deliver on their promise. Artists and cultural workers shouldn&Mac226;t have to wait any longer!

MPP Rosario Marchese Invites You!

Let us together create a strategy to force the Liberals to keep their promise!

Performance art was finally recognized as an art form in its own right in the 1970s. In Radical Gestures Jayne Wark situates feminist performance art in Canada and the United States in the social context of the feminist movement and avant-garde art from the 1970s to 2000. She shows that artists drew from feminist politics to create works that, after a long period of modernist aesthetic detachment, made a unique contribution to the re-politicization of art.

Wark brings together a wide range of artists, including Lisa Steele, Martha Rosler, Lynda Benglis, Gillian Collyer, Margaret Dragu, and Sylvie Tourangeau, and provides detailed readings and viewings of individual pieces, many of which have not been studied in detail before. She reassesses assumptions about the generational and thematic characteristics of feminist art, placing feminist performance within the wider context of minimalism, conceptualism, land art, and happenings

Jayne Wark is associate professor, art history, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
