1. FADO CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: DOCUDRAMA (with visiting artist/curator Chumpon Apisuk)
August 16, 2006

DOCUDRAMA session with CHUMPON APISUK
August 16, 2006, 7 - 10 pm
Toronto Free Gallery
660 Queen St. E.
Toronto, Ontario

Do you come to Fado's events but lurk in the back corners wishing there were a friendlier way to meet the artist afterward? Have you always wondered how to make contact with that fabulous international network of performance artists you've heard so much about? Do you have a great videotape of a performance you did in Paris, Ontario that no one in Toronto has even heard about?

In conjunction with Fado's visiting artist programs, we invite local performance artists to participate in an ongoing networking initiative. This is a chance for you to come meet visiting artists in person, and talk to them (and a few of your local colleagues) about your work. Fado proposes DOCUDRAMA, an informal evening where up to 10 local artists can meet to talk about their work and show 10 minutes of documentation. Because space is limited and we want to keep the sessions intimate, participants MUST RESERVE IN ADVANCE..

Local artists are invited to present short talks about their work in the presence of Thai artist and curator Chumpon Apisuk, who will be visiting Toronto with various representatives of EMPOWER and 5 - 6 Kumjing dolls. EMPOWER's project of migrant dolls will be exhibited at the Global Village (Metro Toronto Convention Centre) as part of the XVI International AIDS Conference taking place in Toronto August 13 - 18, 2006. EMPOWER's visit is assisted by the Toronto Sex Worker group Stella.

Call or email Paul Couillard, Fado's Performance Art Curator, to book a DOCUDRAMA spot and to make sure we can accommodate the tech requirements for your documentation. 416-822-3219 or info@performanceart.ca

7. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: "Dowsing for Failure" Open Space (Victoria)
Deadline: August 25, 2006; Source:Akimbo

Open Space Arts Society is currently inviting submissions for DOWSING FOR FAILURE, a curated group exhibition slated to run from December 15, 2006 to January 21, 2007 (Ted Hiebert & Doug Jarvis: curators)

Failure - as something that cannot be willfully coveted but must, in many ways, be "happened" upon accidentally and in most instances unintentionally - holds, from our perspective, many innovative and intriguing artistic and theoretical possibilities. In exact opposition to the philosophy of the "happy accident" that forms much of the romance of failure as a legitimate element of artistic discovery, DOWSING FOR FAILURE will seek specific artists that have encountered ways of not succumbing to the optimistic and opportunistic mobilization of failure in the name of success. Rather, our interest is in representing creative works in all disciplines that, through discourses of failure, open possibilities for informal discovery rather than mobilizing the proprietary claim to "originality." While highly political in the privileging of inquiry over declaration, the politics of DOWSING FOR FAILURE are more aptly contextualized as a by-product and side effect of the works to be exhibited rather than an accusation of more linear and calculated political curation.

From our perspective, failure is not something that can - properly speaking - be cultivated. Rather, to intend to fail is to make failure into the specter of its own success, a self-fulfilling prophecy that optimizes legitimate failure, candy-coating the disastrous with its own form of inverted and anesthetized sensitivity. This is not the "type" of failure in which we are interested. In other words, we are not interested in the vampiric "turning" of failure into success, preferring instead to acknowledge the profoundly traumatic experience of failure as a moment of existential futility in which worlds and selves collapse into nothingness, disavowed even by themselves, pheonixes that refuse to be reborn from the ashes of their own devastation.

In this spirit, DOWSING FOR FAILURE seeks precisely those moments in which failure is un-recuperable, irreducible or insurmountable. There is, obviously, a paradox involved in the representation of such moments, which is how DOWSING FOR FAILURE will avoid the strictly therapeutic connotations of failure in favour of its representative renderings. In other words, what we are interested in - in the context of this project - are precisely those moments in which failure cannot be salvaged, but can nevertheless be represented or invoked or suggested, such that the moment of artistic and creative intensity - the notion of art-making as extreme sport - fully congeals as indifferent to its own success as represented by an equal indifference to its failure. Here, the stakes of making art in a contemporary world fully materialize as a project not of making meaning, but rather as strategies for dealing with the fact that there is none. No merit in meaning. No merit in success. And consequently, no merit in failure proper, but rather in those methodologies invoked for mobilizing failure to some other end. And these are ends that (again) cannot be properly intended, but require rather a nuanced representational presence in order to tease out the latent possibilities of their inherently revolutionary form.

Curatorial Method
Following the Call for Submissions for DOWSING FOR FAILURE, we will select a short-list of artists whose work offers possible strategies for the mobilization of failure. From this short list, the final artists to be exhibited will be chosen through a documented series of dowsing experiments in which dowsing rods will be used to divine the qualitative relationality of the proposal to the theme of failure. The process (obviously) is flawed, but necessary in order to ensure that the exhibition resists the calculated attempt to successfully represent failure, instead gravitating towards the circumstantial and contingent assessment of proposals as representative of a certain undefinable, yet nevertheless present, relationship to the theme.

Consequently, DOWSING FOR FAILURE should be taken literally as a descriptive title and evocative declaration of the premise for the exhibit. We neither condone nor dismiss the potential of dowsing proper as an allowable or legitimate activity. Rather, here we are interested in methods for accumulating works of a certain sort that will fit within a certain parameter of meaning; one that might be seen as evocative rather than didactic, and which consequently requires an invocative method of selection rather than an explicit assessment of categorizable appearances.

Submissions
All submissions must include the following:

a brief artist CV (max. 3 pages);
a one-page statement relating your work to the theme of the exhibition;
artist support material: 10-15 slides or digital images on CD, clearly identified. video and audio submissions should be limited to a maximum of 10 min. (total), and should be sent on CD or DVD only;
descriptive list for support material (title, date, dimensions, running time, medium);
Self Addressed Stamped Envelope for return of support material (please ensure correct postage). Submissions not accompanied by a SASE will not be returned.

** technical requirements for work submitted should be clearly noted in the application.

Please send your proposal by August 25, 2006 (postmarked) to:

Attn. Dowsing for Failure
Open Space
510 Fort Street, 2nd Floor
Victoria, BC. V8W 1E6

Inquiries should be directed to: Ted Hiebert (<mailto:ted_hiebert@yahoo.com>ted_hiebert@yahoo.com) or Doug Jarvis (<mailto:dougjarvis@gmail.com>dougjarvis@gmail.com). Please indicate "Dowsing for Failure" in the subject line of your email.

10. POSTGRADUATE OPPORTUNITY: Higher Institute of Fine Arts (Belgium)
Deadline: September 1, 2006; Source:Instant Coffee

The HISK (Higher Institute of Fine Arts) organizes the postgraduate education in Flanders in the field of the visual arts. It provides some thirty young artists from Belgium and abroad (see a list of former laureates on http://www.hisk.edu ) with a studio of their own, for a duration of two years.

At the HISK the emphasis lies mainly on individual practice, with an international focus. The visiting lecturers are crucial (see a list of former lecturers on http://www.hisk.edu ) . Artists, curators, critics and theoreticians pay individual studio visits at regular intervals. There are also frequent visits to significant art events, and readings and workshops are organized. Thanks to the unique HISK concept the participants are given every opportunity to seriously invest in the critical research of their work, and to situate it within a broader artistic, cultural and societal context.

From January 2007 on, the HISK moves from Antwerp to its new premises in Ghent.

Based on an former military domain (the Leopoldskazerne) nearby the Museum of Contemporary Art (SMAK), the University and the central station (Sint-Pieters-station) this building offers 30 individual studio’s (from 40 to 80 m2), a multi-media lab, workshops for wood, metal, casting, a project exhibition space, library, lecture room and facilities (kitchen, cafeteria, internet-corner) for the candidates laureates. Ghent is one of the most lively students cities of Flanders and has a great cultural and artistic climate (see http://www.gent.be). Renting a room or apartment in Ghent is still affordable.

Applications
The HISK does not impose strict demands on previous education, yet it does focus on a candidate’s level of development. The application is based on submitted work from past years and on the basis of an interview about the motivations for the artistic project which the participant wishes to undertake during his/her study.

In the assessment of the submitted works by the artists concerned, their conceptual and visual qualities are paramount; not style, material or technique.
Considering the HISK’s aims, the participants are, besides their own practice, expected to have a strong commitment to conducting critical research in their own field of interest, in relation to the broader perspective of social and cultural elements.

Moreover a contribution to the activities of the HISK as a whole is expected. Interaction is an important feeding ground. The work period culminates in a public presentation of the candidates’ work after which a certificate of Laureateship is awarded.

The working year begins annually in early January.

To apply, please send the following:

1. Information
- the duly completed application form (see http://www.hisk.edu or attached file)

16. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: "Haptic" - CAFKA.07 (Kitchener)
Deadline: November 1, 2006; Source: CAFKA

Our physical connection to objects and spaces is essential to our being in the world: in the environments we inhabit, in the ways we relate to one another, and in the products we create. From the distinctive craftsmanship of the Waterloo Region's German and Mennonite founders to the region's current role in shaping the technological future we see a consistent understanding of the importance of haptic relationships from the outstanding design and use of materials in early furniture to the engineering prowess and innovation in our high-tech and research sector. This local context gives us a unique perspective from which to investigate the interplay of science, technology and artistic vision in the formation and understanding of our connections to places and things.

We ask artists to consider actual or metaphorical possibilities enabled by the haptic connection, whether achieved through exceptional handling of traditional materials or of new media. Artists may wish to consider how contemporary art practice, with its emphasis on the new, co-exists with and incorporates the skills, techniques and values of the past: to explore haptic relationships, or how contemporary art practice places into question the Cartesian duality of mind and body.

For Haptic, CAFKA invites proposals for new or existing works that engage with the theme and the environment in and around City Hall. Works in all media will be considered including sculpture, performance, video, audio, installation, photography, painting, drawing and new media. Video artists are invited to submit work relating to the theme. CAFKA.07 will create a video compilation to be screened during the Forum.

The exhibition will take place in and around Kitchener City hall for 11 days at the end of September, 2007. Artist Fees paid for Visual and Media Art Projects: CND $2,000 (intended to cover all aspects of mounting including materials and transportation). Video and one-time Performance fees paid in accordance with CARFAC (Canadian Artists' Representation/le Front des Artistes Canadiens).

Please submit 10 images (JPG/JPEG format or 35mm slides), or video documentation (NTSC DVD or VHS), along with 10 copies of printed matter including: Curriculum Vitae, project proposal, technical requirements, budget, and a completed application form. All applications must be received by November 1, 2006.

Courier Address:

For more information please contact <mailto:cafka@contemporaryartforum.ca>cafka@contemporaryartforum.ca or call (519) 744-5123.

23 projects will be selected and artists will be notified within approximately two months. Absolutely no fax submissions will be accepted. Support material must be in one or more of the following formats: CD, DVD, VHS, JPG/JPEG, PDF (for text) or 35mm slide. Other media will not be considered. 20. NEWS: Video Data Bank Publishes FEEDBACK Catalog of Video Art and Artist Interviews (USA)
Source: Video Data Bank

To coincide with its 30th anniversary, the Video Data Bank is publishing FEEDBACK: The Video Data Bank Catalog of Video Art and Artist Interviews (Temple University Press). Founded at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1976, the Video Data Bank is a pioneering institution in the media arts movement, and houses and distributes one of the world's largest collections of videotapes by and about contemporary artists.

Edited by Kate Horsfield and Lucas Hilderbrand, FEEDBACK is both a catalog of the VDB's extraordinary collection and an invaluable historical survey of over 40 years of video art. The 360-page volume includes annotated listings of 1,500 titles by over 500 artists, from Vito Acconci to Julie Zando, as well as essays by Gregg Bordowitz, Vanalyne Green, Kate Horsfield, and Peggy Phelan that explore the aesthetic, technological, and cultural histories and methodologies of video making as an art practice and political tool.

The Video Data Bank began as an in-house collection of video art made by School of the Art Institute of Chicago students in the early 1970s. In 1974, VDB co-founders Kate Horsfield and Lyn Blumenthal began work on a unique series of videotaped interviews with artists. These tapes are the basis of the VDB's On Art and Artists collection, which forms a unique component of the VDB catalog and which continues to grow.

In 1976, Kate Horsfield and Lyn Blumenthal were hired by the School of the Art Institute to restructure and re-catalog the Video Data Bank collection. To fulfill the need for wider exhibition of these works, the VDB began building a distribution network in the late 1970s. From a small group of universities and colleges, this network has grown into one of the most important venues for building exposure and exhibition of video-based art. The VDB has collaborated with institutions worldwide on curating and programming from its collection, among them the Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; Tate Modern; Centre Pompidou; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; the International Film Festival Rotterdam; and the Melbourne International Film Festival. The acquisition of the famous Castelli-Sonnabend collection of early video art in 1985 (including artists such as Vito Acconci, Lynda Benglis, Joan Jonas, and Bruce Nauman) provided the impetus for the VDB to begin an ongoing preservation program, enhancing the image quality of the tapes and ensuring their continued availability.

FEEDBACK is the product of three decades of the Video Data Bank's unique distribution, exhibition, and preservation programs. With a collection that includes work ranging from the formative years of video art to important new artists such as Sadie Benning, Paul Chan, Jem Cohen, Miranda July, and Walid Raad, the Video Data Bank continues to promote the growth of video-based art.

About the Video Data Bank (VDB)
Founded in 1976 at the inception of the media arts movement, the Video Data Bank is the leading resource in the United States for videotapes by and about contemporary artists. The VDB collections feature innovative video work made by artists from an aesthetic, political, or personal point of view. The collections include seminal works that, seen as a whole, describe the development of video as an art form originating in the late 1960's and continuing to the present. The videos in our collections employ innovative uses of form and technology mixed with original visual style to address contemporary art and cultural themes. Through a national and international distribution service, the VDB makes video art, documentaries made by artists, and taped interviews with visual artists and critics available to a wide range of audiences. The Video Data Bank is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art, and the Illinois Arts Council, an agency of the state.

SIGN WAVES OUTDOOR SOUND INSTALLATION:
SONIC BOARDWALK by Kristi Allik & Robert Mulder
open 24/7 until October 1st

Sonic Boardwalk is a sound installation that generates a microsound landscape activated by the kinetic imprint of passing visitors. The work has been installed on a section of the boardwalk on Toronto Island between Wards Island and Centre Island on the south side. The installation's microsounds can be perceived as a mapping and modeling of certain aural characteristics of various bell sounds, enabling the boardwalk pedestrian to 'create' their own hybrid acoustic ecology consisting of an 'orchestra' of natural and sounds.

Please stay tuned for the opening date of the second Sign Waves Outdoor Installation: Barry Prophet's Synthecycletron, a site-specific sound sculpture on which participants will generate power by pedaling which will in turn activate synthesizers and generate sounds.

Date: August 6, 2006; Source: Greig de Peuter

Entangled Territories
A Toronto School of Creativity & Inquiry event
With/in Adrian Blackwell's carpool + Republic of Safety
Sunday, August 6, 2006
4:00-8:00pm

Location:
Idomo east parking lot
1100 Sheppard Ave. West (across from Downsview Subway station)

The gentrification of Toronto's downtown has displaced low-income residents. New immigrants, often precariously employed, are warehoused in high-density structures within low-density suburbs. City land is rezoned for optimum profit extraction rather than for livability. The costs of using public transit are rising as new programs of surveillance carefully monitor the smog-saturated city…

This neoliberal agenda remains contested by urban social movements committed to the building of a new commons: street protests, squats, community gardens, housing co-ops, public-space interventions, regularization campaigns…

Toronto's territory is entangled in divergent forces of neoliberal enclosure and public commons. Animating this play of forces is a triad of actors: capitalists, governments, and multitudes. At stake in their balance of power is access to affordable places to live, sources of healthy food, a secure income, mobility, pleasurable forms of life…

- How is capital capturing urban territories? Which spaces are currently under threat of enclosure?
- What possibilities exist for the state to protect existing public spaces or initiate new ones, when its role has increasingly become the policing of space?
- What capacities do we have for escaping existing enclosures, in the name of constructing new urban commons?

Join us for a conversation in and about the city's entangled territories. We'll move ourselves through a series of small-group discussions, and then end off the event with a collective conversation.

The event will be held in a parking lot near Downsview Park. This space is entangled, at the end of a subway line, yet in the middle of the city: in the inner suburbs, next to an army base, big boxes, and warehouses, at the confluence of highways, subways, and an airport. Our site is an abstract space of pause within this non-place of circulation.

About TSCI
Collaborating with a network of activists, artists, and theorists, Toronto School of Creativity & Inquiry initiates events that inquire into the new enclosures and creative pathways beyond them.

About carpool
carpool (apparatus of capture) is a tent that connects four cars to form a larger composition. The cars are caught in fabric, creating a structure as they move apart from one another, temporarily immobilizing them while opening their private interiors to public use.

25. EVENT: "Viva! Art Action " (Montréal)
Date: September 28 - October 8, 2006; Source: Viva! Art Action

(français suivant)

Five Montreal artist centres have joined in a group initiative to launch a new international event in Montreal - Viva! Art Action - to take place from Thursday September 28 to Sunday October 8, 2006.

Artists, the public, curators, and providers of exhibition spaces will come together to showcase and promote action art - performances, “manoeuvres,” public and participatory interventions -, characteristically ephemeral, ethereal, changing, unfolding in the “here and now.”

Viva! Art Action will foster an exchange between various practitioners and the public through a series of diverse presentations reflecting the explosion of performance art in Montreal and in Quebec.

Artist centres articule, Centre des arts actuels SKOL, Centre d’art et de diffusion Clark, La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse, and DARE-DARE have come together to breathe new life into action art, which is relatively little known of the general public though it has largely been at the heart of visual arts culture.

Inspired by the Dada movement of the early twentieth century, the practice is now inscribed in the most varied contexts. The yearly programming of Montreal artist centres testify to sustained interest in performance art, from here and abroad, while its development is the result of specific key events, such as Galerie du collège Édouard-Monpetit’s Performance + Artefacts (1989), the biennial presentation since 1994 of Mois de la performance by La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse, and the 2000 and 2001 editions of FA3 -Festival Art Action Actuel-, including the saddly missed Anticorps space (2001) under the direction by Gabriel Doucet Donida.

This first edition of Viva! Art Action will also inaugurate the 14th SoToDo Performance Art Congress, revealing about thirty artistic works scattered through the programming of the artist centres and in other intervention spaces. On this occasion, Bain Saint-Michel, serving as welcome venue and daily meeting place, will host theoretical discussions, practical workshops, and festive evenings. To support the Réseau des Centres d’Artistes Autogérés du Québec, an artist touring program is also scheduled throughout the region, in collaboration with Praxis art actuel, in Sainte-Thérèse, and TRAFIC Inter/nationale d’art actuel en Abitibi- Témiscamingue, organized by Écart.
Viva! Art Action is the place to be this fall!
